Built during the 1990s on an exceptional natural site, the Royal Golf Club of Fez has been given a new look through a reconstruction operation combining aesthetics, functionality and enhancement of the site. A work by the Archid agency, led by Mounia Chaouni B.
Located in a strategic spot 3 km from Fez-Saïss airport, near the spiritual capital and the motorways, the Royal Golf Club of Fez had lost some of its panache despite its natural setting of high historical and ecological value. The proliferation of golf courses in Morocco and increasingly fierce competition prompted the client, CDG, to give this facility a second wind — through a modernisation of the clubhouse, the creation of para-golf activities, and a better distribution of spaces and services.
The Archid agency, led by architect Mounia Chaouni B, was selected by direct commission, given its experience with this type of project. It is a “turnkey” operation, which also includes landscaping, the design of outdoor and indoor spaces, and decoration. Given the dilapidated state of the buildings, it was decided to demolish them in favour of a new construction better in tune with the image sought by the client, CDG. Among the latter’s requirements was the enhancement of the site’s natural landscape and its integration as an element shaping the whole course and contributing to the management of flows and access. The programme provided for three buildings: the clubhouse, the fitness centre and the technical facility. They had to be made to dialogue with one another, while also distinguishing the visitor’s route from the golfer’s.
